J. W. Fiegenbaum
In 2007, J. W. was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a collection of bone marrow stem cell disorders resulting in disorderly and ineffective blood production. A variety of medical treatments were prescribed, the most enduring of which involved periodic blood transfusions, the frequency of which were dictated by the results of weekly blood tests. It was known that the transfusions would have only diminishing effectiveness at ameliorating the symptoms of the disease.
Towards the end of 2009, as Dad's strength waned and the frequency of intervention rose, he spoke often of the appropriateness of ending a regimen that offered no cure, demanded so much from him, and gave less and less comfort. We spoke together as a family and Dad agreed to continue with his treatments until the end of the year, a goal that allowed us to celebrate his 85th birthday on December 25 and to enjoy a family get-together during the holiday season.
Dad's last transfusion was on December 28. As expected, within a week there began a noticeable decline in his strength. With the help of Hospice and his primary care doctor, we were able to offer Dad a level of comfort that allowed him to remain at home. He died in his sleep very early in the morning on January 13, 2010.
As he participated in writing his obituary and planning his funeral, Dad often spoke with thankfulness of the rich and meaningful life he had enjoyed. The gift of family and friends was the blessing he always cherished most.
Dad was buried at a private service on January 15, 2010 in Pelham Valley Cemetery, Pelham, Massachusetts.
A memorial service is planned for January 30, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church, One Church Street, South Hadley 01075. A time for fellowship & remembrance will follow the service.
