"It is right that he [Konrad Johann Ludolph Starkebaum] married Elisabeth Meßmacher on 15 Apr 1792 in the church of Sonneborn. The date 28 March 1792 in Amt Barntrup accords the date of marriage record. It was usual until the year 1870 that the engaged couple stated their approaching marriage by the Inferior Court about four weeks bevor the church marriage. This local office for Sonneborn was the Inferior Court (= Amt) in the next larger town Barntrup. In this marriage record (german: Eheprotokoll) were entered the names of the couple, their parents, where the couple intends to live and - the most important point - the marriage portion and financial affairs. So it was like a marriage contract. After 1870 it was not longer usual for a couple to make a Eheprotokoll. In the 1870th the official civil marriage was stated and in this years the marriage license bureaus startet their work in Germany. On this way there´s no contradiction in term of the marriage date between the records of Pastor Hein and our researches."
