    • The marriage was performed by Rev. Franz (Frederick) Picker. When enumerated for the 1900 U. S. Census, Margaretha, a 65 year old widow, was identified as the mother of 11 children, of whom only 5 were alive at the time the enumeration. A German language obituary for Margaretha also mentions her 11 children, only three of whom survived her.

    • In her will of February 1911, Margaretha Etling made a bequest to "the grand children of my Deceased Son Louis Etling." August, Charlotte, Louis, Martha, Florence and George each received $5.00 dollars. She made a similar bequest to "the grand children of my deceased Daughter Kathrinne [sic] my eldest daughter..." The names which follow this statement appear to be, on the basis of other sources, the children of Katherine, not her grandchildren. They are Margaretha's grandchildren. I believe the same error has been made in the identification of Louis' "grandchildren." I believe these are actually his children and have entered them here as such. This matter requires additional research and confirmation.

Margaret Etling; head of household; widow; married for 24 years; mother of 11 children, of whom 5 were still alive at time of enumeration (June 1900). At that time, living with Margaret was her 12 year old grand daughter, Louisa Maeser. Other sources indicate that Margaretha's husband, August Etling, died in December 1876. If it is correct, as stated in the census, that the marriage lasted for 24 years, it would seem that August and Margaretha were married about 1852.
