A biographical sketch of "Dr. F. W. Winter."
"Dr. Winter was born in Wapello, Iowa, in 1852, a member of one of the pioneer families of the state. His father, William Winter, was a native of Germany, and after his emigration to this country he enlisted in the army and served in the Mexican war. ... His wife was Mina Filgenbaum [sic], who was born, reared and educated in Germany."
Dr. Winter's mother, Maria Wilhelmine Fiegenbaum (not Filgenbaum), was born in the Province of Westphalia, Kingdom of Prussia in 1833. In 1834, she and her family immigrated to the USA.

Friederick Wilhelm Winter, son of Wilhelm and Wilhelmine Winter, was born on 16 January 1853. The date of baptism was not recorded. This record appeared in Volume 1, page 130 of the church registers.
The mother's maiden name is not provided in this record. However, two other baptismal records in this transcription for the very same couple report the mother's maiden name as "Fieg" and as "Fiegenbaum."
In the published transcription of the baptismal register from this source, 37 records provide a birth date but not a baptismal date; all but one of these occurs on pages 130 or 131 of volume 1. Of the 36 records on these 2 pages, all lack information on the mother's maiden name, the adddress of the family, and the name of the pastor. Furthermore, 24 of the 36 records also fail to record the year in the date (the transcribers have suggested a year based on the sequence of the records). The absence of information in these 36 records stands in contrast to all the others and would suggest that between May 1851 and September 1854, the recording of baptisms was not carried out quite as diligently as at other times in the church's history.
In light of this pattern, and entirely without confirming research, I have assumed that the date of 16 January 1853 in the record for Friederick Wilhelm Winter is actually the baptismal date and not the birth date. This, of course, needs to be confirmed.
