    • In various civil and church records through the course of his life, this person is identified as either Johann Heinrich or Hermann Heinrich. There is also some confusion concerning the date of birth as reported by various researchers: either 12 May 1788 or 6 July 1787. Some say that the Johann Heinrich Fiegenbaum born in 1788 married Anna Catherine Lagemann and that the Johann Heinrich born in 1787 married Catherine Elsabein Hagen.
A satisfactory resolution of this matter may require a rigorous inspection of records in Germany. In the meantime, I have chosen to follow the lead provided by the published emigration record and the records of the church in Holstein, Missouri.

    •      The Fiegenbaums were from a class known as Heuerleute or tenant farmers. "They owned no land, and they lived in rented houses on larger farms. Every large or middle-sized farm in Ladbergen had one or more tenant houses (in German: Heuerhäuser) scattered over the farm. The highest number on any farm in Ladbergen was seven; two or three was common. Each tenant farm house had its own plot of 7 to 12 acres. The tenants rented the houses and plots for life. The tenant farmers were not the same as sharecroppers or rental farmers in the American sense. They had only a small plot to themselves, and they did not need to give any of the yield to the landowner. They were essentially renters of houses who paid for their dwellings with a small amount of cash and a specified number of days of labor. In the 19th century the tenants were typically relatives of the landowners, but this was decreasingly the case after the turn of the century."
In addition to farming, Johann Heinrich also worked as a carpenter, a trade which his father also followed.
Hermanda Fiegenbaum, of Münster, reports: "Die ganze Familie, Eltern mit den verheirateten und ledigen Kindern und den Enkelkindern, wanderte 1841 nach USA. aus." ["The whole family, parents with married and single children and the grandchildren, emigrated in 1841 to the USA."].
A total of at least 13 people from this extended family emigrated from Ladbergen. Johann Heinrich (at age 53), his wife Catharina Elisabeth (born Hagen; at age 54), and their two youngest children, Christina Elisabeth (she turned 22 near the end of the voyage) and Hermann Heinrich (at age 18) comprised one family unit. The two eldest daughters were already married by the day of departure. Anna Elisabeth Aufderhaar (b. 1811) and Anna Christine Bierbaum (b. 1815) both emigrated with their husbands and those of their children who had been born before 1841. Sophia Bierbaum, Anna Christine's sister-in-law (age 18) also left Ladbergen at this time.
This group departed Germany from the port of Bremen on the bark Leontine. Of the 102 persons on board, 56 were identified on the passenger list as former residents of Ladbergen. Four other persons were from the nearby towns of Brochterbeck and Lengerich. The Leontine arrived at Baltimore, Maryland on 28 June 1841. The Fiegenbaums, Aufderhaars and Bierbaums traveled further west and settled in Warren County, Missouri.
It would appear that the eldest Fiegenbaum son, Heinrich Adolf (b. 1814), emigrated alone in 1843.

    •      The newly married couple lived in the Horstmeier Heuerhaus located in Bauerschaft Holperdorp, a section of the town of Lienen. Their first child was born there. It would appear that within a few years the family had moved. The couple's second child was born in the nearby village of Ladbergen. By 1800, the family had built a house at Ladbergen-Wester 21, located in the section of the village know as "In der Laake." Hermann died in this home in 1829 and Anna passed a year later. In 1840, the house was sold. It may be that some of the proceeds from this sale helped finance Johann Heinrich Fiegenbaum's family emigration to the USA in 1841.
In addition to being a carpenter or house builder, Hermann Heinrich Fiegenbaum was a Heuerling or tenant farmer. Tenant farmers were low on the social scale in Ladbergen at the time. From 1808 to 1810, the village of Ladbergen found itself located in the département Ems of the Grand Duchy of Berg (French: Grand-duché de Berg; German: Großherzogtum Berg), a client state of the First French Empire.
In 1811 borders were redrawn again and Ladbergen was incorporated into the First French Empire as part of the Département Ems-Supérieur (German: Departement der Oberen Ems, or, Ober-Ems).

    1. [S4] Lieselotte (Freese) Fiegenbaum, Genealogical research, Letter of Sepetmber 1981 to Jane (Fiegenbaum) Paget.
"Of interest to you is Johann Heinrich Fiegenbaum, born 6th July 1787 (not 12th May 1788) at Ladbergen. Your ancestor - his profession was carpenter - helped his father and built houses."
Later in her letter, Liselotte returns to this subject: "Regarding the two different dates of birth of Johann Heinrich Fiegenbaum it may be a mistake in the records or another possibility: Chatherina Elisabein Fiegenbaum neé Hagen married twice. From old records it is quite obvious that a person born 12th May 1788 actually lived.
"Another point that has to be looked at is that the average people could neither write not [sic] read. So by filling in he documents for emigration a mistake very well could happen.
"Nevertheless according to the records of the church at Ladbergen your ancestor was born 6th July 1787. All the other details i.e. wedding, children, are correct."
In the last sentence, it is possible that Liselotte is referring to information which Jane Paget had sent.
In a hand-written postcript to this letter, Liselotte wrote: "The woman from J. H. F. geb. 1788 was A. Catr. Lagemann - born in Ladbergen." Here she is referring to Johann Heinrich's wife.

    2. [S1] Hermanda (Lagemann) Fiegenbaum, Genealogical research.
In a letter from Hermanda on 15 September 1996 to J. W. Fiegenbaum, she wrote: "The second child [born to Hermann Heinrich Fiegenbaum and Anna Christien [sic] Katharina Horstmeier] was Johann Heinrich born May, 12. 1788 in Ladbergen - your forefather, married to Hagen, went to USA."
Lieselotte Fiegenbaum, of Ladbergen, insists that the correct date of birth for this child, Johann Heinrich Fiegenbaum, was July 6, 1787. She acknowledges the existence of someone born on May 12, 1788 in the Ladbergen church records, but does not identify this person or explain his relationship.

Herman Heinrich Fiegenbaum was a child of Herman Heinrich Fiegenbaum and Anna Christina Katharine Horstmeier. Bill Roege provided two birth events.
           1) Herman Heinrich Fiegenbaum was born on 6 July 1787. Bill Roege did not provide a source for this date, but it is probably derived from Mr. Roege's note for Herman Heinrich's marriage event: "husb (*6.7.1787), parents Herm Heinr Fiegenbaum & Anna Cath Horstmeier;..." Bill Roege's note for this birth event was: "Auswanderer book has birth 12.5.1788" (i.e. 12 May 1788). This is presumably a reference to his source for Herman Heinrich's emigration to the USA about 1841: "Hans Berlemann. Auswander der Geminde Ladbergen 1830-1930. 1995.
           2) Herman Heinrich Fiegenbaum was born on 12 May 17 at Ladbergen, Westphalia, Germany. Bill Roege's source for this second birth event was: "John Block. Notes from John Block's family tree, extracted from records and passed from other researchers." He did not mention the information he included in his note for the first birth event (see the previous paragraph).

Fiegenbaum / geb[orn] / Mäi 12 1788. / in Ladbergen, / Kreis Teklenburg [sic] / Regierungsbezirk / Münster / Königsreich / Preussen, gest[erben] / Mär. 12, 1861." Photo in the possession of J. W. "About the parents of Johann Heinrich Fiegenbaum I could find out the following particulars: [here Lieselotte Fiegenbaum included birth information for Hermann Hendrick Fiegenbaum and Anna Catherina Fiegenbaum née Horstmeier].
"They [Hermann Hendrick Fiegenbaum and Anna Catherina Fiegenbaum née Horstmeier] were married on 20th November 1785.
"They lived in Lienen-Holperdorp in the 'Heuerhaus' Horstmeier. (Heuerhaus: A smaller house standing on the ground of the farm and belonging to it. The tenant-farmer livining therein had to pay the rent partially in work.)"
On page 1 of the letter, Lieselotte had included additional information about this couple:
"Hendrik Fiegenbaum and his wife, née Horstmeier - the parents of J.H. Fiegenbaum - most probably bought some ground were [sic] upon they built their house which received the number 21, which means it was the 21st house built in Wester. In the year 1840 the house was sold. In 1865 a Fiegenbaum took over the number 21 for his newly built house. This property of Hendrich (which is equal to Hendrik) is already mentioned as Wester 21 during the year 1800.
"About this fact I have to ask for some further information at the Münster Record Office. As soon as possible I shall give you the correct information about that."

    29. [S1] Hermanda (Lagemann) Fiegenbaum, Genealogical research.
Hermann Henrich [sic] Fiegenbaum and Anna Christine Katharina Horstmeier were married on 20 November 1785 in Lienen.
In a letter dated 15 September 1996 to J. W. Fiegenbaum, Hermand wrote: "That couple Fiegenbaum-Horstmeier had seven children, one son died as infant, one son and two sisters stayed in Ladbergen. They built or bought a house near village Ladbergen called 'In der Laake'. That house isn't but I saw the plot of land, last year it was a big cornfield. He was a carpenter like the sons. He died in this house on March 11. 1829. He had water dropsy and need a doctor. So is it written in the church record."

Johann Heinrich Fiegenbaum, born 6 July 1787 at Ladbergen, and Chatherina [sic] Elisabein [sic] Hagen, born 26 September 1786 at Ladbergen-Overbeck 16, were married in 1810 at Ladbergen.
Lieselotte wrote: "At the beginning he and his wife, neé Hagen, lived in the "Heuerhaus" on the ground of the farm Hagen and belonging to it at Ladbergen, Overbeck 16. "Heuerhaus" means: a smaller house which belongs to the main farm. To the Heuerhaus always belong a few acres. Normally people living at a "Heuerhaus" are tenant-farmers who pay rent partly in work.
"During the time the couple lived at Ladbergen-Overbeck their two daughters were born. Their only son was born at Ladbergen, Wester 21."
Later in her letter, Liselotte indicates that this couple had 5 children.

    39. [S135] Bill Roege, Ladbergen Genealogy Database (2nd draft edition; November 1999) (http://members.aol.com/WRoege/ladbergen.htm - last confirmed in March 2005).
Herman Heinrich Fiegenbaum and Catharina Elisabeth Hagen were married on 13 July 1810 at Ladbergen, Westphalia, Germany. Bill Roege included a note for this event: "husb (*6.7.1787), parents Herm Heinr Fiegenbaum & Anna Cath Horstmeier; wife (*26.9.1786), unmarried dau hlg Joh Heinr Hagan & Anna Elis Holtkamp."
I believe the note may be based on the marriage entry in the records of the church at Ladbergen. It should be noted that the date format starts with the day, followed by the month. This should be obvious with the birth date of the "wife" - 26.9.1786 is 26 September 1786. I am guessing that the letters "hlg" in the note stand for the German word Heuerling.
