"Johann Heinrich Uthlaut was born August 3, 1789 to Johann Hindrich Uthlaut (b. 1754) and Anna Catharina Kibben (b. 1759). The family lived in Lienen, Kreis Tecklenburg, Westphalen, Prussia (Germany). He was one of six known children born to this family. Johann's siblings include Anna Catharina (b. 1783), Johann Ernst (b. 1787), Ernst Wilhelm (b. 1794), and Ernst Friedrich (b. 1804). It is not known whether any of these siblings migrated to the United States."

Death and burial records. Johann Heinrich Uthlaut died 22 June 1865 at the age of 76 years. He was born in Liene [sic]. Calculating from the date of death and age at death provided in this record, Johann would have been born about 1788-1789.

"Sometime during 1836 the decision was made by Johann Heinrich and Anna Catharina Elisabeth to move their family from the community of Lienen Kreis Tecklenburg, Westfalen to the New World....The Uthlaut family arrived in the New World via the Port of New Orleans in November of 1836 as indicated in the Passenger and Immigration Lists Index for that year. Johann and Anna Catherina's [sic] children that made the trip with them included Conrad Ernst, Heinrich Rudolf, Friederika Sophia, Sophia Elisabeth Frederika, Friedrich Wilhelm Herman and Wilhelm Jacob.... [They] landed in the area known as the Holstein-Treloar region of Missouri. There they settled taking up farming and living in the midst of other German families who had come before them. The fact that they arrived in the area in the dead of winter leads one to believe that they received aid and shelter from the other families living in the area."

"It is highly probable that J. H. KERSTEN and JOHN UTHLAUT brought their families to America with the "Thirty-twoers". To alleviate the doubt that exists we might say that 1831 is more correct for JOHN UTHLAUT'S arrival since it is reported that RUDOLPH, his son, was 6 years old when he came to our shores and RUDOLPH was born on June 25, 1824." "JOHN UTHLAUT is believed to have settled in the Holstein-Treloar area, possibly on the farm in Treloar bottom that was in the Uthlaut family for a long time."

"Johann departed from this life on June 22, 1865 at the age of 76 years. Johann's tombstone is located to the north of the marker showing the site of the log cabin church. Where Johann's wives Anna Catharina Elisabeth and Maria Sophia are buried is not known." The "log cabin church" is identified earlier on page 7: "Johann became one of the charter members of the Immanuel Evangelical Church at Holstein [Missouri]. He and his family soon joined in with the activites of the church. He helped with the building of the first church called the German Lutheran Church on Charette which was a log cabin finished on February 27, 1839. A marker shows the site of that first church in Holstein, which burned, to the ground on January 22, 1855."
