"Rudolph and Sophia were married on October 16, 1857 in Holstein. They eventually settled in the Chamois, Missouri area to raise a family. Their children included John Henry, August, William, Jacob, Frederick, Wilhelm Louis, and Caroline....Sophia [Caroline's mother] was relatively young when she died on May 21, 1877 at the age of 44....Caroline, the only girl in the family, was only five years-of-age when her mother died." By calculation from these facts, Caroline would have been born about 1871-1872.

"Rudolph was left with the job of rearing the children by himself after the early death of Sophia. Caroline, the only girl in the family, was only five years-of-age when her mother died. Her descendants have related how she used to tell the story that she and her father did most of the work within the house while her brothers handled most of the work outdoors on the farm."

"After their marriage RUDOLPH and SOPHIA moved to Osage County, Missouri and went into housekeeping on a farm at Deer, Missouri.... However, February 4, 1872, must have been a day of great joy for this family, when a daughter, CAROLINE, was born unto them."

"This family of motherless children stayed together and their father, RUDOLPH UTLAUT, guided them to adulthood as best a father could. CAROLINE often told of the way that she would knead bread when she was a little girl. Her father would put the bread pan on a chair so she could reach it, as the kitchen table was too high for her. The boys were old enough to do the farm work outside, thus allowing father to manage the household and do the housework with the help of his daughter. Thus the family managed to stay together until RUDOLPH, the father, was called from this earth on March 25, 1888, in his 66th year."

Just when and where they were wed or where SOPHIA grew up is not known, but it is quite likely they were united in marriage in Holstein, since it is known that a sister of SOPHIA married a Mr. Schomberg who lived his life in that community. After their marriage RUDOLPH and SOPHIA moved to Osage County, Missouri and went into housekeeping on a farm at Deer, Missouri, where they actively engaged in tilling the soil. There they raised their family amidst sorrow and joy, becoming the parents of seven children."
