"The name of his wife was Christine Elisabeth STRATE or FISCHER. This practice of surname giving is a very peculiarity. If a man married a daughter of a farmer and the couple took over the farm of the father-in-law, the young husband usually assumend the surname of his wife. In this case their children mostley took the surname of their mother too. In church records frequently there are entered two surnames for a child - the surname of the father and the surname of the mother. On this way it is explainable that Christine Elisabeth was known as STRATE or FISCHER! But her best known name was STRATE, so the report of Pastor Hein is right!
"By the way: Johann Bernhard/Conrad Starkebaum, her husband, took over the farm of his father-in-law (No. 86 in Sonneborn) and was also known as STRATE after his marriage with Christine Elisabeth.
"I'm sure already that 'Conrad' was not one of his first names; so you can cross it out!"

In the record of the marriage, the names were recorded as Johann Berend Starkebaum and Christine Elisabeth Strate. Berend is a short form of the name Bernhard. Martin wrote: "In the records of the birth dates of their children there [is] no uniform given surname for Johann Bernhard Starkebaum and Christine Elisabeth Strate."
