    • In the 1860 U.S. Census, eight month old "Louis" Gerber is identified as having been born in Baden. In latter enumerations, and in his death certificate, George Louis Gerber's place of birth is reported as St. Louis, or Missouri. The confusion seems to arise from determining exactly when his parents emigrated from Baden. It is reported that they married in 1858 shortly before leaving for the USA and that their son was born shortly after they arrived in Missouri. The exact date of the marriage and the exact date of their appearance in St. Louis awaits further research.

    • According to his death certificate, George died at home from cerebral apoplexy. Arteriosclerosis was a contributing cause. An undated obituary from a local newspaper read:

           GERBER - On Sunday, Dec. 21, 1924, at 3 a.m., George L. Gerber of 2616 Potomac street, beloved husband of Charlotte Gerber (nee Etling) and father of Selma A., Eugene A. and Louis A. Gerber and Mrs. Frances Seesler (nee Gerber) and our dear brother, brother-in-law, father-in-law, grandfather and uncle, in his sixty-fifth year.
           Funeral from the Schumacher funeral home, 3013 Meramec street, Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 2 p.m., to Park Lawn Cemetery.
           Deceased was a member of Jefferson Lodge, No. 119, I.O.O.F; Lyon Council No. 21, Jr., O.U.A.M., and Osceola Pride, I.O.R.M.

      On page 39 of a genealogical report prepared (by Robert E. Parkin?) for Howard J. Seesler, it is stated that George Louis Gerber, first child of George Jacob Gerber and Franceska Mueller, was born on 20 October 1859 shortly after his parents immigrated to St. Louis. The author goes on to point out that in the 1860 U.S. Census, George L. Gerber is identified as having been born in Baden, while in subsequent federal cenuses, his place of birth is given as St. Louis.

Franceska was born on July 25, 1831. Some of her Mueller relatives apparently immigrated at the same time as the newlyweds, and also settled in St. Louis....In all, Franceska and George - often familiarly called "Jake" - had six sons. Those, in addition to George L. Gerber [born October 20, 1859], were Otto H. Gerber, born in 1864; Philip Adolph Gerber, born in 1867; Gustav B. Gerber, born in July, 1869 (St. Louis Census 1870:Ward 3:34 [#386]:16-23); Frederick William Gerber, born in 1871, and Rudolph M.     25. [S98] Rudolph Vogt Gerber, Genealogical research.
      In an autobiographical sketch written on Christmas 1978, Rudolph recalls that his grandfather, George Jacob Gerber, married Fancesca Mueller in 1838. This date appears to be a typographical error. Francesca (or Franceska) died in 1924 at the age of 93 (an age at death which Rudolph also mentions in his memoir). These dates would give her a birth year of 1831. It seems unlikely that she would have married in 1838 at the age of 7.

Gerber." In her will, signed 15 February 1911, Margaretha writes about her daughter, Charlotte Gerber, wife of George L. Gerber.
