    • According to information provided by a Maurice Stern for Joseph's death certificate, Joseph was born at Brownsville [sic], Nebraska. However, a biographical sketch of Joseph's father published in 1882 indicates that the family moved from Ohio to Platte County, Missouri in 1840 and remained there until 1844, at which time the family relocated to Holt County, Missouri. According to this biography, the family did not move to Nemaha County, Nebraska Territory until 1855 and had returned to Holt County, Missouri in 1860. The land which became Nebraska Territory, including Brownville, was unorganized territory of the original Louisiana Purchase until the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in May 1854.

                Adrian Hoblitzell.

           The subject of this sketch is one of the pioneer settlers of Northwestern Missouri, and is the father of the members of the well known firm of Hoblitzell Brothers. He is the son of John and Rebecca (Cary) Hoblitzell, and is of French-German descent. Mr. H. was born June 27, 1809, in Alleghany County, Maryland. He was there reared to manhood, and received his education, also learning the trade of tailoring. At the age of 21 years he emigrated to Huron County, Ohio, where he resided till 1840, when he removed to Platte County, Missouri. After remaining there till 1844, he came to this county, and was engaged in various branches of business, among them being farming, tailoring, and merchandising. In 1855 he removed to Nemaha County, Nebraska, where he lived till 1860, then returning to this county, and in 1876 he became interested with his sons in their extensive business. Although quite an old gentleman, Mr. H. is yet actively engaged in business, and would, by his energy and sprightliness be taken for a much younger man. He was married August 30, 1830, to Miss Elizabeth Darland, a native of Pennsylvania. They have had seven children, four of whom are now living: Julia A. (deceased), William, Christenia, Eunice (deceased), Cornelius, Joseph and James (deceased). They are members of the M. E. Church. Mr. H. was one of the original members and trustees of the first church of that denomination built in Oregon. He was at one time constable of Lewis Township, and was county judge of Nemaha County, Nebraska, for one term.

Father's name: Adrian Hob [sic]; born at Cumberland, Maryland. Mother's maiden name: Eliaebeth [sic] Dorlin [sic]; born in Penn[sylvania]. Died at 5:40 a.m. on 19 March 1928 at St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri at the age of 84 years, 2 months, 7 days. His usual residence was 5201 Swift Street [St. Joseph, Missouri?]. He was widowed at the time of death; his wife had been "Sarah A. Hoblitzell." His trade or profession had been "Retired Lumberman." Cause of death was "Acute Uremic Poisoning" (5 days duration). Contributory cause of death was "Chronic [Interstitial?] Nephritis" (4-5 years duration). There was no operation prior to death. There was no autopsy. Diagnosis was confirmed clinically. Burial, cremation, or removal was to be on 20 March 1928 at or to "Ashland Cemetery." The undertaker was Fred D. Clark, of 5025 King Hill. Personal information was provided by Maurice Stern, of 5201 Swift. William A. Robertson, M.D., of 6210½ King Hill Ave., St. Joseph, Missouri, had attended the deceased from 15 March 1928 to 19 March 1928 and signed the death certificate on 20 March 1928. The certificate was received by the local registrar on 20 March 1928.
