    1. [S22] Obituary, For [Katherine?] Mayer.
" ________ Mayer, geb. Etlinger geliebte Gattin von John Mayer,...ging ein zur ewigen Ruhe nach längerem Leiden am Montag, den 27. Januar 1908, um 8 ½ Uhr Morgens, im Alter von 50 Jahren, 10 Monaten und 10 Tagen. If this calculation of her age was correct, she would have been born on 17 March 1857. Identified as a member of the grieving family was Marguerite Etlinger [sic], Mother; Charlotte Gerber, sister; Lizzie Wende, sister; and Emilie Beyer, sister.            Letter from the office of Finkelnburg & Rassieur, attorneys at law; dated 16 December 1876. The letter includes a list of surviving heirs of August Etling. Identified as one of his children is Catharine Augusta Muehlemann, nee Etling, wife of John Muehlemann.

    3. [S211] Article or notice, Photocopies of two notices In Memoriam from undated and unidentified [St. Louis?] newspapers.
One notice is from 1 year after her death; the other dates from 5 years after her death. Katherine's given name has been lost from her obituary clipped from the newspaper. It has been reconstructed here from photocopies of two memorial notices. One, printed on the first anniversary of her death and signed by her husband and children, gives her name as Kathrine. The other, on the fifth anniversary of her death, is signed only by the children and records her given name as Catherine. In her mother's will, she is referred to as Kathrinne. The obituary records the last name as Etlinger. Among others who signed the newspaper notice are Marguerite [sic] Etlinger [sic], mother; Charlotte Gerber, sister; Lizzie Wende, sister; and Emilie Beyer, sister. On the basis of these names, it has been assumed that the appearance of 'Etlinger' is a mistake or a typographical error.

Margaret Etling; head of household; widow; married for 24 years; mother of 11 children, of whom 5 were still alive at time of enumeration (June 1900). At that time, living with Margaret was her 12 year old grand daughter, Louisa Maeser. Other sources indicate that Margaretha's husband, August Etling, died in December 1876. If it is correct, as stated in the census, that the marriage lasted for 24 years, it would seem that August and Margaretha were married about 1852.
