"They [George August Meinershagen and Maria (Mary) Louise Hackmann] came by boat to Lafayette County in 1876 arriving at Berlin. He farmed southwest of Higginsville. The brick residence built in 1880 made from brick hauled from Lexington, Mo. Coal mining was beginning in the community when he purchased the McMeekin farm for $32.50 per acre which included mineral rights."
