Following service overseas in the Army during World War II, he was a librarian at Northwest Missouri State College at Maryville, Missouri; was Missouri State Librarian for 15 years; served as Chief of Library Services and Construction in the U.S Office of Education at Washington, D.C.; and was Director of the St. Louis Public Library.
