"At the end of the school year closing in 1849, he left school [McKendree College], not to return because of failing health. In 1850, he went overland to California, but in the summer of 1851 he returned and resumed the business of farming."

"...died 9 October 1881 at the home of his sister, Lucinda Irwin, at Lawrence, Kansas;" "In July, 1881, William M. T. Springer started to Colorado for his health. He stopped at Lawrence, Kansas to visit his sister, Lucinda, wife of Samuel P. Irwin, but he became worse, and died there on October 9, 1881. He was brought back to Edwardsville, and buried in Woodlawn Cemetery."

"On March 16, 1826, John Springer married the young widow of George Biggs, Elizabeth Byrd Biggs, daughter of John Byrd. Although there is no record of the marriage in either Madison or St. Clair County, it is verified by a notice in the 'Edwardsville Spectator' for March 25, 1826: 'On March 16, 1826, John Springer of Madison County and Mrs. Elizabeth Biggs of St. Clair County were married by the Reverend Joseph Oglesby, M. G.' A similar notice appeared soon after in the 'Illinois Intelligencer', published at Vandalia."

William McKendreeThompson Springer and Margaret Jane Barber; married 7 January 1857 in Decatur, Illinois, where Margaret's step-father, Rev. Joel Knight was preaching. Margaret was the daughter of John Barber, Jr. and Eliza Robinson Barber. William M. T. and Margaret (Barber) Springer "lived on the old home place" [in Fort Russell Township (Madison County), Illinois] and had six children.
