Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Mühlemann, George was born Feb 1877, Missouri, USA (son of Mühlemann, John and Etling, Katherine Augusta); died Yes, date unknown.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 1880, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
    • Census: 1910, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
    • Census: 1920, St. Louis, Missouri, USA

    Notes:

    Birth:
The date of birth is based on data found in the federal census.

    Census:
The John Mühlemann household appeared twice in the 1880 U.S. census of St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday, June 7 and again on Tuesday, June 8, each time visited by a different enumerator.
Among other discrepancies between this two sources, George appeared as a child in only one enumeration.

    Census:

According to the 1880 U.S. census for St. Louis, George Mühlemann was living at 9715 Wyandotte. He was identified as a 33 year old laborer in the hardware trade, born in Missouri and married for seven years to his wife, Mary, age 27, born in Minnesota. Mary was identified as the mother of two children, both still living, namely, Ruth, age 4, and George, age 2, both born in Missouri.
Also living in the home was Minnie Sprenemann, a 37 year old, widowed, sister-in-law of George, born in Minnesota, and her only child, Paul Sprenemann, age 15, born in Missouri, a laborer in a shoe factory.
The seventh member of the household was George's 71 year old, widowed, aunt, Louise Neunhaus. She was born in Germany and still spoke German. The date of her immigration to the USA is recorded but difficult to decipher; perhaps it is 1873 or 1875?

    Census:

As enumerated in the 1920 U.S. census for St. Louis, George, age 42, born in Missouri, was living at 1126 South Thirteenth Street. He worked as a foreman at a dairy. Mary, his wife, was 39 years old, born in Minnesota.
George and Mary had four children living with them: Ruth, age 14; George, age 12; Le Roy, age 7; and Elmer, age 5. The enumerator identified all of the children as having been born in Minnesota, like their mother, but this would seem to be a mistake. Other sources seem to indicate that all the children were born in Missouri.
Also living in the home was Mike Eckert, identified as a 50 year old, single, brother-in-law of the head of the household, who worked as a bottler in a brewery.

George married Steffen, Mary Between 1902 and 1903. Mary was born 1881/2, Renville, Renville County, Minnesota, USA; died Yes, date unknown. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Married:
According to the 1910 U.S. census, George and Mary had been married for 7 years, which would place the date of marriage at about 1902-1903.

    Children:
    1. Mühlemann, Ruth was born 1905/6, Missouri, USA; died Yes, date unknown.
    2. Mühlemann, George L. was born 1907/8, Missouri, USA; died Yes, date unknown.
    3. Mühlemann, Le Roy John was born 5 Feb 1912, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; died 20 Jul 1934, Festus, Jefferson County, Missouri, USA; was buried , St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
    4. Mühlemann, Elmer P. was born 19 Apr 1914, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; died 22 May 1939, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; was buried 25 May 1939, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
    5. Mühlemann, Violet June was born 13 Jun 1920, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; died 23 Nov 1939, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; was buried 27 Nov 1939, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Mühlemann, John was born Between 1851 and 54, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; died Yes, date unknown.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 1880, St. Louis, Missouri, USA

    Notes:

    Birth:
At the time of the 1880 U.S. census for St. Louis, Missouri, John was reported as both 26 and 28 years of age. At present, these conflicting data are the only evidence for John's date of birth and explains the uncertainty shown here.
The exact spelling of "John" Mühlemann's surname has not been resolved. Apart from the questions of using an umlaut or not (ü or ue) or a double or single 'n' (mann or man), the rest of the name has been subjected to interpretation in U.S. census returns, probate court documents, newspaper obituaries and state death certificates. Variations include: Mühlemann, Mühlmann, and Mülhemann. A definitive answer may no doubt require research at the family's place of origin in Switzerland. In the meantime, I have chosen to use Mühlemann.

    Census:
John Mühlemann's household appeared twice in the 1880 U.S. census of St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday, June 7 and again on Tuesday, June 8, each time visited by a different enumerator.
John's age was recorded as either 26 or 28. His wife's age was recorded as either 23 or 24. According to the two enumerations, they were the parents of either one child, Charlotte, or of two children, Charlotte and George.
Both enumerations showed the presence of Barbara Bamberg, a widow, age 63 (or perhaps 69), born in Switzerland, who was identified as either a mother or step-mother of the head of the household.

John married Etling, Katherine Augusta. Katherine (daughter of Etling, August Louis and Dienstbier, Margaretha) was born 17 Mar 1857, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA; died 27 Jan 1908, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; was buried 29 Jan 1908, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Etling, Katherine Augusta was born 17 Mar 1857, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA (daughter of Etling, August Louis and Dienstbier, Margaretha); died 27 Jan 1908, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; was buried 29 Jan 1908, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 1880, St. Louis, Missouri, USA

    Notes:

    Birth:
Katherine's obituary records her age at death on January 27, 1908 as 50 years, 10 months and 10 days. If this calculation is correct, she would have been born on March 17, 1857.

    Census:
The John Mühlemann household appeared twice in the 1880 U.S. census of St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday, June 7 and again on Tuesday, June 8, each time visited by a different enumerator.
Katherine's age was recorded as either 23 or 24. Her husband's age was recorded as either 26 or 28. According to the two enumerations in 1880, they were the parents of either one child, Charlotte, or of two children, Charlotte and George.

    Buried:
Funeral services were held at the family home, 2819 Neosho Street, on Wednesday, January 29, 1908 at 2:00 p.m. and then proceeded to St. Matthew's Cemetery.

    Died:
    An obituary read:

              ________ Mayer,
nee Etlinger beloved wife of John Mayer, and our dear mother, daughter and sister passed to her eternal rest after a long period of suffering on Monday, 27 January 1908, at 8:30 a.m, at the age of 50 years, 10 months, and 10 days. Funeral on Wednesday, 29 January, at 2:00 p.m., from the family residence, 2819 Neosho Street, to St. Matthew's Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. - The grieving family:
         John Mayer, husband.
         Marguerite Etlinger, mother.
         Geo. Muehlemann, son.
         Fred. Muehlemann, son.
         Aug. Mayer, son.
         Charlotte Bowe, nee Muehlemann, [daughter?].
         Lizzie Schmidt, nee Mayer, daughter.
         Charlotte Gerber, sister.
         Lizzie Wende, sister.
         Emilie Beyer, sister.

The top of this newspaper clipping which contained the first name of the decease is missing, as is most of the word in the line "Charlotte Bowe, geb. Muehlemann, To_____." This is almost certainly the German word Tochter (daughter), which also appears in the next line.
