    Frank, of 3232 Olive, died in City Hospital from pulmonary tuberculosis. He was a laborer and married at the time of his death, but the hospital employee who provided the personal information on the death certificate did not record the spouse's name.

    Funeral services, lead by Rev. J. J. Fink, pastor of the Evangelical Jesus Church (Twelfth and Victor Streets), were held at the family residence, 2629 Twelfth Street. Services at St. Matthew's Cemetery were under the direction of General Lyon Post, G. A. R., the Odd Fellows, and the Sons of Veterans. Benjamin was survived by his wife, Emma, and the following children: Erwin Etling; Charles; Francis; Emma; and Mrs. Henry Scheer.

         _____ funeral of Benjamin W. Etling, _____ one time a member of the City ______, will take place this afternoon at ___ck from the family residence, 2629 _____ Twelfth street, to St. Matthew's ___ery. Rev. J. J. Fink, pastor of the ___ngelical Jesus Church, Twelfth and Victor streets, will officiate at the residence, and at the cemetery the service will be in charge of Gen. Lyon Post G.A.R., the Odd Fellows and the Sons of veterans. Mr. Etling died after five weeks illness from uraemia Thursday morning at 7 o'clock. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emma Etling, Erwin Etling of the Mounted District, Charles, Francis and Emma Etling and Mrs. Henry Scheer.
         Mr. Etling was born in Allsfeld, Germany, October 13, 1840, and with his parents emigrated to St. Louis in 1846. He was educated in the public schools here. In the civil war he served as a private soldier under Gen Lyon. He made bridles for his regiment, while his patriotic wife worked day and night making feed bags for the artillery. From 1872 he was in the harness business at 2600 South Broadway, to December, 1876, when he entered the employ of Anthony & Kuhn Brewing Company as a commercial agent. In 1876-77 he was in the City Council and served as chairman of the Waterworks Committee. He remained with Anthony & Kuhn until 1899, when the plant was bought by the St. Louis Brewing Asso___…[the end of the text is missing]."

    According to an undated obituary for Benjamin W. Etling from an unidentified newspaper, he was survived by his widow, "Mrs. Emma Etling." However, the death certificates for two people who seem to have been his children report their mother's maiden name as Mary or Marie Eckhard or Eckardt.
         It is not presently known whether Benjamin was married twice or if his wife's given names were Marie and Emma.

    Christian, his wife (who name is not yet known) and at least two children, August and Benjamin, immigrated to St. Louis from Alsfeld, Grand Duchy of Hesse, in 1846.

    Military Service:

         Christian Etling enlisted on 2 September 1861 at St. Louis in the First Regiment, US Reserve Corps, Missouri Infantry, serving in Company H under Captain Leonard. He entered as a Corporal and left service with the rank of Sergeant. He was discharged on 23 June 1862 at St. Louis because of an inguinal hernia.

    Buried:
    Christian was first buried in Holy Ghost Cemetery. The body was later moved to St. Matthew Cemetery at 4360 Bates Street.

    Died:
    Documents filed with the St. Louis Probate Court state that Christian Etling died "on or about" 25 October 1875. His gravestone in St. Matthew Cemetery in St. Louis shows a date of death of 24 October 1875.
