    • Census: 1880, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
    • Census: 1890, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
    • Census: 1900, St. Louis, Missouri, USA

    Notes:

    Birth:
Private Conrad Thoma was wounded in action at Bull Run, Virginia on July, 21, 1861. He was judged to be partially disabled, and discharged from the Army on October 21, 1861. At that time he was 5' 4½" tall and 24 years old, of fair complexion, with grey eyes and brown hair. By occupation he was a laborer. The Certificate of Disability for Discharge and the Certificates for Pension filed in October 1861 state that Conrad Thoma "is twenty four years of age". On both forms the words "is" and "years of age" are pre-printed. A space is provided for the person completing the form to enter the number of those years. If these two standard forms have been filled out correctly, Conrad Thoma would have been 24 years old in 1861. By calculation, this would give him a date of birth of 1837 (It seems less likely the reference is to his age at the time of his enlistment in 1858; this would give him a birth date of 1834). This does not agree with a date of birth of January 11, 1839 stated on the Copy of the Certificate of Death issued by the City of St. Louis on November 30, 1903. On the Certificate of Disability for Discharge, the place of birth is recorded as 'Walinberg', Germany. In the 1900 U.S. census, Conrad's birth date is recorded as Jan 1839.

    Immigration:
In the 1990 federal census, Conrad is enumerated as a naturalized citizen who immigrated to the USA in 1854.

    Military Service:

Private Conrad Thoma of [Bvt?] Major William Brooks[?] Company G of the Third Regiment of the United States Infantry was enlisted by Lieutenant Philipps of the same regiment on July 7, 1858 at Syracuse, New York for a term of 5 years. On July 21, 1861, Conrad was wounded in action at Bull Run, Virginia. A musket ball "passed through his left hand, shattering the third and fourth metacarpal bones." He was judged to be partially disabled, and discharged from the Army of the Potomac on October 20, 1861 in Washington, D.C. At that time he was 5' 4½" tall and 24 years old, of fair complexion, with grey eyes and brown hair. By occupation he was a laborer. His stated age of 24 years at the time of his discharge would give him a date of birth of 1837. This does not agree with the date of birth supplied on the Copy of the Certificate of Death issued by the City of St. Louis in 1903.

    Census:
The household in which Conrad Thoma lived was enumerated twice in the 1880 federal census. The first enumeration, in June, was rejected. The second, which seems to have been accepted as official, was dated November 1880. In the latter, Conrad's household was placed at what appears to be 220 Jackson Street. He was identified as married, 42 years of age, having been born in Württemberg, and worked as a cane bottomer.

    Census:
According to the 1890 U.S. enumeration of veterans and survivors, Conrad Thoma was living at 2331 South Second Street.

    Census:
According to the 1900 federal census, Conrad's date of birth was January 1839, his age was 61 years, and his place of birth was Germany. He immigrated to the USA in 1854 and was a naturalized citizen. He had been married for 36 years and now made his living as a baker.

    Buried:
Conrad was buried at New St. Marcus Cemetery. William Michel is listed as the undertaker on the Copy of the Certificate of Death issued by the City of St. Louis. According to Charlotte C. (Brockmeyer) Gerber, the pastor from Old St. Marcus Church on Soulard Street preached. New St. Marcus Church is on Giles Ave. (off Grand).

    Died:
Conrad died at his home at 208 Lami St, St. Louis, Missouri. The cause of death was listed as many years of chronic rheumatism.

Conrad married Elbert, Anna Maria 24 Apr 1864, Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA. Anna was born Nov 1838, Kingdom of Bavaria; died Aft 1910, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; was buried , St. Louis, Missouri, USA. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Elbert, Anna Maria was born Nov 1838, Kingdom of Bavaria; died Aft 1910, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; was buried , St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

    Other Events:

    • Immigration: 1860
    • Census: 1880, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
    • Census: 1900, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
    • Census: 1910, St. Louis, Missouri, USA

    Notes:

    Census:
Anna Thoma's household was enumerated twice in the 1880 federal census. The first enumeration, in June, was rejected. The second, which seems to have been accepted as official, was dated November 1880. In the latter, Anna's family appears to be living at 220 Jackson Street. She was identified as married, 43 years of age, having been born in Bavaria, and was keeping house.

    Census:
In the 1900 federal census, the Thoma family is living at 2331 South Second Street. Anna's date of birth was given as November 1838 and her place of birth was Germany. She had immigrated to the USA in 1860. Anna was the wife of Conrad Thoma; they had been married for 36 years. She was recorded as being the mother of 13 children, 5 of whom were still living in 1900 (compare these figures with those reported in the 1910 federal census).

    Census:
In the 1910 federal census, Anna was head of a household at 208 Lami Street that also included her son, John. She was identified as a 71 year old widow who had been born in Germany and had immigrated in 1860. Anna is recorded as the mother of 9 children, 5 of them were still living in 1910 (compare these numbers with the enumeration in 1900).

    Buried:
The funeral was from Our Lady of Sorrows Church (on Gravois). Burial was at New St. Marcus Cemetery.

    Died:
Anna died at her home at 208 Lami Street in St. Louis, Missouri. The exact date is not yet determined. Some research states that she died in 1907. However the 1910 federal census finds Anna, age 71 and a widow, living with her son, John, age 32 and a widower. By the time of the 1920 census, John is residing in the household of his married sister, Louisa Merkel.

    Notes:

According to the Declaration for Widow's Pension, Anna and Conrad had 11 children, but only five were still alive in 1903, and all of these were over 16 years of age.

    Married:

In her Declaration for Widow's Pension (sworn to on November 16, 1903, and stamped by the US Pension Office on November 14, 1903), Anna declares that she was married to Conrad Thoma under the name of Anna M. Schneider and was a widow at the time of her marriage to Thoma. She further states that Conrad Thoma was single and had never been married before. A letter from the Baltimore Cemetery Company (8 South Street, Baltimore, Maryland), dated January 16, 1904, certifies that Lawrence Schneider died of apoplexy [stroke?] on February 16, 1864 at the age of 59 years and was buried February 18, 1864 in grave No. 4, Lot No. 93, Section II "in said cemetery". Signed by William R. Fluharty, Secretary. The letter bears the US Pension Office stamp with the date of February 9, 1904.
