    Caroline's preference for her nickname of Lena was so strong, according to family stories, that her use of it in place of her legal given name raised some difficulties when she applied for her Social Security benefits. It was also the name inscribed on her gravestone.

    Lena is buried in the Lexington Memorial Gardens at Lexington, Missouri. Her gravestone records her name as "Lena A. Struchtemeyer." Her family reports that she used Lena to the exclusion of Caroline.

    According to the 1900 U.S. enumeration, John A. Fasse, age 7 and attending school, was living in the home of his parents, Herman H. Fasse (age 53) and Lizzie C. Fasse (age 52). Also in the home were his six surviving siblings: William H. Fasse (age 27); Theodore F. Fasse (age 24); Emma A. Fasse (age 22); Pauline C. Fasse (age 18); Alford [sic] Fasse (age 15); and Walter H. Fasse (age 12).

    Residence:
    According to information on his World War I draft registration card, filed on 5 June 1917, John August Fasse, single, without dependents, and age 24, lived at Higginsville and was a farmer. The Registrar of the local draft board described John as a man of medium height and stout build; with blue eyes and light brown hair and balding. There were no other physical characteristics that would disqualify him for military service.

    Military Service:
    John August Fasse served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He enlisted in Missouri on 25 April 1918 and was discharged on 14 April 1919. He was a private in Company C, 342 Machine Gun Battalion, 89 Division.

    John's grave is in the Higginsville City Cemetery.
