He sojourned briefly in St. Louis, Missouri, surviving the city's cholera epidemic of 1844 and later moved on to Warren County, Missouri. It is understood that at least one brother was also in Warren County and that he may have moved on to the area around Bowling Green, Missouri. In both the 1900 and 1910 U. S. Census, Ernst, as he is name there, was recorded as having immigrated to the USA in 1847. The exact date of his immigration requires confirmation.

The 1860 U.S. Census enumeration shows two children in the household who do not appear in subsequent census returns: John Winter, age 3 (born about 1856-57) and Christina Winter, age 1 (born about 1858-59).
