    When registering for the U.S. military draft in June 1917, Fred stated that he was born on 17 October 1889 at Chester, Illinois. According to information on his death certificate, Fred was born on 17 September 1891 at Chester, Illinois. The year of birth has also been reported as 1890.

    According to the 1900 federal enumeration, Frede H. Sternberg, age 9 and attending school, lived with his parents, David L. Sternberg, a 38 year old farmer, and Matilda Sternberg, age 36; and his five brothers: Erven F. Sternberg (age 12), in school; David A. Sternberg (age 8); Alva C. Sternberg (age 6); William G. According to information on the draft registration card, he was 27 years old, working as a stationary fireman for the Commonwealth Steel Company, of Granite City. He lived at 2018 Bryan Avenue, was married, and had one child. He did not claim any exemption from the draft. The registrar described Fred as of medium height and build with blue eyes and "light" colored hair and no physical disabilities.
