    According to the 1900 federal enumeration, John Neer, age 11 and in school, was living with his parents, Martin Neer (age 44) and "Amilia" Neer (age 38), and his eight siblings: Fred Neer, (age 14); twin sisters, Lizzie and Nellie Neer, (age 13); Nettie Neer, (age 9); Edward Neer, (age 6); Mannie Neer, (age 5); Clara Neer, (age 3); and, Hilda Neer, (age 10 months).

    Military Service:
    According to his World War I draft registration card, John was 28 years old, single without dependents, and a resident of Mayview, Missouri. He was working as a farmer for Mischea [sic]. He claimed an exemption from the draft as the result of typhoid fever. Oscar H. Rabius, the Registrar of the draft board in Mayview described John as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and dark brown hair.

    John served as a private in the U. S. Army during World War I from 15 June 1918 to 31 July 1919.
