    Jessie E. Springer, in her genealogy of the family (1959), writes: "In the summer of 1849 an epidemic of cholera swept across much of the country, including Madison County. Elizabeth Byrd Springer fell ill with the dread disease, and died on June 24; her husband followed her in death the next day, June 25, having been ill only twenty-four hours. They were buried in the same grave in the cemetery on the farm."
