    Immigration:
    Family history recounts that one of Joseph and Barbara (Klaus) Kiefer's infant children died of cholera during the voyage of emigration. Barbara, desiring to bury her baby on land, hid the corpse in a trunk until the family arrived in the USA. The Kiefers landed in New Orleans and traveled up the Mississippi River to Commerce, Missouri. Shortly thereafter, Barbara also died of cholera, and was buried in New Hamburg, Missouri. The family eventually settled on a farm between New Hamburg and Oran.

    Barbara died of cholera at the age of 32 in 1856, shortly after her family had completed their voyage from Germany and had traveled up the Mississippi River to Commerce, Missouri.
