According to the 1900 federal enumeration, Bertha, age 22, single, was living with her mother, Ida Siemers, and her five brothers and sisters: Eddie, Fred, Emma, Walter, and Ida. Also living with the family was Eddie Heckmann, an 18 year old farm laborer.

According to the 1910 U.S. census, Daniel and Bertha had been married for seven years. Two children had been born to the couple, but only one of these was still living: Milton Bierbaum. Details of the birth and death of the other child are not known at this time.

He was a pastor at St. John's Evangelical Church, on Union Street. The registrar noted that the 40 year old Daniel was tall, of medium build, with brown eyes and black hair.
