    Military Service:

         In May 1918, a St. Louis, Missouri newspaper published photos of Louis and his brother, Eugene, and a very short account of their activities in the Army:

         "Sergt. Eugene A. Gerber of 1616 [sic] Potomac street sent a letter home in which he says he expects to leave for France at almost any hour. He is with the 8th Coast Company, Signal Corps, England. His brother, Louis A. Gerber, has been with the Headquarters Detachment in France for some time. In his letter he stated that he had formed a band of which he is a bugler."

         Louis enlisted into the U.S. Army on 24 November 1917 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. At the time, he resided in the family home at 2616 Potomac Street (not 1616, as stated in the newspaper notice). He had training in mechanical drawing and work experience as a pattern maker and woodworker. He was initially assigned to the Mechanical Repair Shops, Motor Transport Corp, at Camp Meigs, Washington, D.C. He served overseas from 4 January 1917 to 11 June 1919; part of that time in France. He was honorably discharged with the rank of private 1st class on 12 July 1919 at Camp Zachary Taylor, Kentucky.

    Louis married Brockmeyer, Charlotte Caroline Christine 3 Jul 1920, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Lottie had attended school for 9 months and could read, write and speak English. Also in the home were Lottie's three siblings: John Brockmeyer, age 7; William Brockmeyer, age 5; and, Minnie Brockmeyer, age 3.

    According to the 1910 U.S. enumeration, Lottie Brockmeyer, an 18 year old saleslady at a dry goods store, lived at 3709 Chippewa Street in Ward 13 with her parents, Chas. A. Brockmeyer (age 48) and Lena Brockmeyer (age 42), married for 19 years and Lottie's five siblings: John Brockmeyer (age 17); William Brockmeyer (age 15); Minnie Brockmeyer (age 13); Carl Brockmeyer (age 7); and Mathilda Brockmeyer (age 5).

    Census:
    According to the 1920 U.S. enumeration, Charlotte Brockmeyer, age 28 and single, lived at 3433 Osage Street in Ward 13 with her parents, Chas. A. Brockmeyer, 56 year old head of household, and his wife, Lena, age 52, and three of Charlotte's siblings: William Brockmeyer (age 25); Charles Brockmeyer (age 16); and Mathilda Brockmeyer (age 14). Also living in the home was Joseph H. Shad, age 28, identified as a widowed son-in-law of Chas. A. Brockmeyer.

    Died:
    Charlotte died while a patient at St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Louis (St. Louis County), Missouri. Her death was certified by Dr. Leroy F. Ortmeyer (2623 Telegraph Rd., St. Louis, Missouri), License No. 26274. Date of death: Sept. 16, 1981 at 5:15 a.m. Immediate cause of death was conjunctive heart failure (onset in the preceding 6 months) as a consequence of arterio____ heart disease (onset in the preceding 15 years). Other significant conditions were ____________. No autopsy was requested.

    The marriage certificate refers to a license issued on 3 July 1920 by the Recorder of Deeds of the City of St. Louis. Rev. F. W. Weidmann of Trinity Lutheran Church signed the certificate. Miss Charlotte Seele and Mr. Wm. Brockmeyer are listed as witnesses.
