Knapheide," but exactly who F. Knapheide was has not been confirmed. Other research reports that the Knapheide whose death was recorded in the archives of the church in Holstein, Missouri on 2 June 1877 was eight years of age, but there are no unidentified Knapheide children born approximately eight years prior to 1877 who are listed in the church baptismal records; this is hardly definitive proof that the daughter was not stillborn. This matter requires further research.

Otto died at his home by shooting himself in the head with a 22 caliber rifle after also shooting his sister, Clara. She died 16 hours later at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

According to her death certificate, Clara died at 9:00 p.m. in Lexington Memorial Hospital, about 16 hours after being shot in the home two miles south of Lexington that she shared with her brother, Otto, and his wife. Otto shot his sister about 5:00 a.m. with a 22 caliber rifle and then committed suicide.

According to information on his death certificate, Elmer died at 4:30 p.m., within 10 minutes of arriving at Lexington Memorial Hospital. He suffered from sever chest pain, shock and hemorrhaging. The coroner guessed that the cause was a gastric ulcer, but no autopsy was performed.
