In 1893, a biographical sketch of his son, Henry L. Starkebaum, reported that Friedrich H. "Fritz" Starkebaum purchased two hundred acres of land in Warren County, Missouri and took up farming, an occupation he had followed in Germany.

January 21, 1923 was a Sunday. According to his obituary, Henry Fred Starkebaum died at his home 4 miles southwest of town "while at the table eating supper, at 5 o'clock, from paralysis of the brain, at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 20 days." His wife and 3 children proceeded him in death. He was survived by 7 children: Mrs. William [Henrietta ] Fiegenbaum, Mrs. Theo. [Emma ] Tempel, William and Edwin living near Mayview; at home are Wilhelmine, Augusta and Samuel. He also had 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Other contributory causes were chronic alcoholism and cirrhosis of the liver. Harry Ainsworth, of Higginsville, who provided personal information for the certificate, recorded that burial was to be at the Evangelical Cemetery, but did not provide a date. This is no doubt a reference to the cemetery associated with the congregation known since 1957 as Salem United Church of Christ, of Higginsville.

     Henriette moved to 602 Fairground Avenue, Higginsville, Missouri, the home of her son Martin and his wife Clara (Drewel) Fiegenbaum on 9 November 1954, and lived there until her death at 3:30 p.m. on 12 April. According to her death certificate, the cause of death was "Malnutrition & Inanation [sic]" due to senility.
     According to her obituary, Henriette was survived by "three sons, Martin H., John H. and Edwin F. of Higginsville; one daughter, Mrs. August Begemann of Higginsville; three brothers, Wm. Starkebaum and Sam Starkebaum of Higginsville and Edwin Starkebaum of Mayview; and one sister, Mrs. Emma Tempel of Higginsville. Fifteen grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren also survive." The obituary reported that funeral services "will be held Thursday, April 14 at 2 p.m. at the Zion United Church of Christ in Mayview with Rev. A. E. Limper and Rev. Theo. Hauck officiating."
     Henriette's obituary mistakenly claimed that she had been born in Higginsville, Missouri and that she had married in 1892.

     The following obituary was a transcription of a clipping from an unidentified and undated newspaper, probably the Higginsville Advance, of Higginsville, Missouri.

          Edwin August Starkebaum

     Edwin August Albert Starkebaum, age 83, of Higginsville, died Wednesday, January 19, 1972 at the Meyer Nursing Home in Higginsville. He was born November 15, 1888 in Higginsville. He was married to Martha Charlotte Meyer on June 1, 1916. He was engaged in farming until his retirement in 1965. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, a past member of the church board, past member of the Elm Grove school board and the Elevator Board of Mayview.
     He leaves his wife of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Lester Lieser, Higginsville; a sister, Mrs. Theodore Tempel, Higginsville; and two grandchildren.
     The funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 22 at Salem United Church of Christ. Rev. Orval L. E. Willimann conducted the service. Miss Elsie Bleckschmidt was the organist.
     Pallbearers included Boyd N. Foulds, Carl Starke, Jack Gray, Otto Schowengerdt, John Knehans, Sam Sanders, Albert Goetz and Charles W. Pool.
     Burial was in the Salem United Church Cemetery. Friends called at the Wiegers Funeral Home Friday evening.

Paul Robertson, the Registrar of the Mayview precinct of the local draft board, described Martin as a man of tall height and medium build; with light blue eyes and light brown hair (not bald).
