    According to the 1900 U.S. enumeration, John Brockmeyer, age 7, lived at 1832 10th Street in Ward 8 with his parents, Charles A. Brockmeyer, age 36, and Lena Brockmeyer, age 32. John had not attended school and according to the enumeration could not read, could not write and could not speak English. Also in the home were John's three siblings: Lottie Brockmeyer, age 8; William Brockmeyer, age 5; and, Minnie Brockmeyer, age 3.

    According to the 1910 U.S. enumeration, John Brockmeyer, a 17 year old apprentice at a cigar shop, lived at 3709 Chippewa Street in Ward 13 with his parents, Chas. A. Brockmeyer (age 48) and Lena Brockmeyer (age 42), married for 19 years and John's five siblings: Lottie Brockmeyer (age 18); William Brockmeyer (age 15); Minnie Brockmeyer (age 13); Carl Brockmeyer (age 7); and Mathilda Brockmeyer (age 5). John had not attended school since 1909 and was identified in the census as "deaf and dumb."
