According to the 1860 U.S. enumeration, Henry Springer, age 12, born in Illinois and in school, lived in household of 15 people, which included Frederic Springer, a 48 year old blacksmith born in Bavaria; Sophi Springer, age 37 born in Bavaria; and four of Henry's siblings, all born in Illinois: Fred, age 8; Edward; age 6; Othelia, age 4; William; age 2. There was also the family of John Hackey, a carpenter and his wife Alstine, both age 34 and born in Bavaria; and their three children, ages nine months to six years, all born in Illinois. Rounding out the household were three seemingly unrelated young people: Jacob Finkler, a 24 year old blacksmith born in Germany; Fritz Nauman, a 25 year old wagon maker born in Germany; and, Phillip Werner, a 19 year old apprentice blacksmith born in France.

Springer, a 21 year old public school teacher, lived on Clay Street with her father, Henry Springer, a 50 year old manufacturer of buggy supplies, her mother, Virginia M. Springer, age 42, and her five siblings: Rebecca C. Springer (age 17), in school; Elizabeth Springer (age 14), in school; Robert E. Springer (age 11), in school; Virginia C. Springer (age 9), in school; and, Henry J. Springer (age 6), in school.

Occupation:

          Irma taught kindergarten in St. Louis and Edwardsville, Illinois prior to her marriage in 1906. Following her husband's death in 1913, she returned to Edwardsville with her two children and resumed her teaching career until her retirement on 4 June 1943.

Buried:
Irma was buried beside her husband, Warren D. Harris (1878-1913).

Died:

     The following obituary was published in the Edwardsville Intelligencer (Edwardsville, Illinois), on Tuesday, 30 March 1965.

     Mrs. Irma Harris, 86, a retired teacher, who resided the past 11 years with her daughter, Mrs. Virginia Huegely of Nashville, died there Monday at 4:40 p.m. at Washington County Hospital. She had been hospitalized one year.
     She had taught kindergarten in St. Louis and Edwardsville until her marriage on June 6, 1906 to Warren Des Champs Harris, a St. Louis attorney. When Mr. Harris died on March 20, 1913 Mrs. Harris returned to Edwardsville with her family and taught in the schools here until her retirement. She taught from May 1913 until June 4, 1943 in Edwardsville.
     The daughter of Henry James and Virginia Evans Springer, she was born Jan. 2, 1879 in Edwardsville.
     Surviving in addition to her daughter are one son, Warren Harris of San Francisco, Calif.; one granddaughter; and a sister, Mrs. David W. (Rebecca) Fiegenbaum of Edwardsville. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
     Mrs. Harris was a member of the NEA and IEA, and a charter member of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Edwardsville until she moved. She was a member of St. John's Methodist Church.
     Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Weber Funeral Home where final rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday from the chapel. The Rev. Ray B. Porter of Nashville will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Some sources indicate that Julia was born in 1912, 1916 or 1917. The date of 31 May 1914 is found in the Social Security Death Index. The date may also be 3 May 1914. This matter will require further research.

According to the engagement announcement for her sister, Rebecca Charlotte, Elizabeth Jane moved to Edwardsville, Illinois upon her husband's entry into military service. He entered the U.S. Army in July 1943.

Elizabeth was buried at Arlington National Cemetery (Section 3-A, Row 3, Site 5); she shared a grave site with her husband, who had served in the U.S. Army.

     TROY - Rebecca Allen, 84, of Troy and formerly of Edwardsville, Ill., died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Lincoln County Medical Center in Troy.
     No funeral services are planned. The Kemper-Marsh Funeral Home in Troy is in charge of arrangements.
     There will be no visitation.
     Mrs. Allen was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Edwardsville to David and Rebecca Springer Fiegenbaum.
     She was married to John Allen on Aug. 4, 1943, in Edwardsville. He survives.
     Other survivors include two daughters, Mary Charlotte Smith of Fenton and Margaret D. Meeker of Glen Carbon, Ill.; two sons, Thomas G. Allen of Oshkosh, Wis., and David G. Allen of St. Louis; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Julia Brockway of Jerseyville, Ill., and Elizabeth Rodems of Fairfax, Va.
     The family wishes to include as survivors, two sons-in-law, J. Peter Smith and Malcolm Meeker.
     Mrs. Allen was a member of the PEO and DAR in Troy and was in the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She and her husband lived in Troy for the last 26 years.
