Markers & Cemeteries
On this page, you will find a list of the names of family members for whom I can provide a image of the marker identifying their burial or inurnment. As with much of the genealogy I share on this web site, I owe a great deal to the generosity of others - friends, family and even complete strangers. The list of people who have contributed to this project illustrates my indebtedness.
The Historical Practice of Identity
The prevalent practice at the time most of these markers were erected was for wives to be identified by the surname of their husbands. I have followed that practice while compiling this list. An entry for a traditional married couple will display the husband's name first, followed by the wife's name. If I know a married woman's maiden name, I have included that identity as well. The place such an entry occupies in the list will be governed by the husband's surname and then his given names.
For example, Julia B. Gillespie, who married Dr. Edward William Fiegenbaum and whose grave marker is inscribed "Julia G. Fiegenbaum," is identified in the list on this page as "Julia B. (Gillespie) Fiegenbaum" and the placement of this marriage in this list is governed by her husband's name, Edward William Fiegenbaum (alphabetically as Fiegenbaum, Edward ).
If, at the time of union or marriage, neither person changed his or her name, each partner will be identified by that name in this list. In the entry for this union, names will be displayed in alphabetical order according to surname. The place of such an entry in the list will be governed by the first surname.
For example, if Mary Smith and William Doe, or, John Smith and John Doe, formed a union or marriage and the partners decided to keep their birth names, the entry for this union would be displayed as William Doe & Mary Smith or John Doe & John Smith. The location of this union in the list will be determined by the alphabetical order of Doe, John and Doe, William in reference to other names in the list.
Additional Information
Whenever possible, I have identified the place of burial or inurnment as accurately as possible. There will be a link from this place-name to a web page at this site with more information about that place. In many cases, this information will include the names of others in the family history who are memorialized at that location, but I lack an image of their marker. I have often made an attempt to locate the place on an interactive map. If I am aware of additional information elsewhere online concerning these memorials, links to those external sites are also included.
